Why Adaptogens?

My obsession with plants started at fifteen, when I found ginseng and its superpowers. Back then nobody understood the excess energy, the appetite for life, the way I threw myself at every adventure. What they didn't know is that I was already recruiting allies.

Here's the part nobody tells you. The word adaptogen wasn't born in a health food store or a cacao circle. It came out of the Soviet Union. A toxicologist named Lazarev coined it in the 1940s, during state-funded research. What were they after? An edge. A real one. They wanted a super soldier, so they turned to Chinese medicine, to the legendary plants emperors once took chasing immortality. They gave them to Olympic athletes. To cosmonauts on the MIR station. To Arctic explorers, submarine crews, military pilots. High stress, high stakes. A study that ran for decades, stamped Soviet secret... until now.

So when someone tells you adaptogens are a trend, you can smile. This is seventy years of science on plants people have used for millennia.

And what do they actually do? One thing. They help your body adapt to whatever it's carrying. Stress, physical strain, mental load, the hormonal weather. This isn't the fake lift of coffee. It's a reinforcement of the 3 treasures. Adaptogens walk your system back to its center. Chinese medicine knew it. Ayurveda knew it. The Siberians knew it. Now the labs confirm it and go: ah, that's why.

Our blends use lyophilized extracts. Freeze-dried, so one powder holds both the compounds that come out in water and the ones that come out in alcohol. Most products only capture one half. That missing half, plus the quality of our ingredients, the purity, the dosing: that's the difference you actually feel.

Ancient plants, modern proof, nothing to fear. Let's get into the seven.

Our Signature Blend

Excalibur

Seven adaptogens. One dose a day. The same formula I've been quietly refining for twenty years.

Reishi · Chaga · Astragalus · Rhodiola · Cordyceps · Shilajit · Lion's Mane

  • Seven plants, one formula, and here's the secret. Together they're stronger than added up separately. The term is synergy, and there's real gene-expression research showing how a blend switches on things no single ingredient can touch on its own. The old herbalists already knew it. We brought it back to the modern world.
  • Focus sharpens. Energy comes up steady and clean. It holds right through the afternoon instead of spiking and ditching you at 3pm.
  • Shilajit ties the whole thing together and makes everything else hit harder. That's not a bonus ingredient. That's on purpose.

Inside Excalibur

The 7 That Make It Legendary

Reishi

Ganoderma lucidum

The Immortality Mushroom

  • The Taoists called it the mushroom of immortality and put it in front of emperors. Two thousand years later we put it in your coffee. Progress.
  • Monks used it to get the mind quiet before deep practice. That's the feeling. A busy head going still.
  • Two families of compounds, triterpenes and beta-glucans, working your stress response on two fronts at the same time. The fancy word is neuroendocrine. The simple word is balance.
  • Keeps your immune response steady. Not asleep, not freaking out. Just paying attention.
  • Sleep is the tell. Not knockout sleep, but the kind you wake up rebuilt from.
  • In the modern research it's one of the best-documented adaptogens for calming the stress response. The old monks would find that hilarious. They already knew.

Shen (Spirit) · Qi (Energy)

Chaga

Inonotus obliquus

The Siberian Survivor

  • Grows on birch trees in the Russian cold, in weather that would kill you. Takes about twenty years to mature. One lump per tree. This is not a fast mushroom.
  • It spends twenty years pulling betulinic acid straight from the birch bark. The tree's strength, concentrated.
  • One of the highest antioxidant readings ever recorded in a food. The number is almost rude.
  • Beta-glucans keep your defense sharp and proportional. Ready, not twitchy.
  • Siberian grandmothers have brewed birch conk for centuries. They didn't have a lab. They had winters. That's a harder test.
  • Wild-harvested only. The cultivated stuff never grows the same soul. Some things you can't rush and this is one of them.

Qi (Energy) · Shen (Spirit)

Astragalus

Astragalus membranaceus

The Longevity Root

  • Two thousand years at the top of Chinese medicine as the great Qi tonic. It shares the throne with ginseng, and ginseng doesn't make room for just anyone.
  • It carries a compound called cycloastragenol, studied for its relationship with telomerase, the enzyme tied to how your cells age. The ancestors took it for longevity. Now science is catching up to the myth.
  • Builds your immune floor day by day. Not a firework. A foundation you stand on.
  • Steady clean energy that shows up across the whole day instead of one spike and a crash.
  • This one rewards patience. Adaptogens aren't an emergency button. They're infrastructure. You take them because you're building something.
  • If you're on your way back from burnout, start here. Astragalus rebuilds from the foundations.

Qi (Energy) · Wei Qi (Protective Energy)

Rhodiola

Rhodiola rosea

The Soviet Performance Root

  • The Soviets studied this one on their Olympic athletes in the 60s and 70s and wrote it all down. When a government tests a plant on the people it's trying to turn into gold medals, pay attention.
  • Two compounds, rosavin and salidroside, studied for their action on focus and mood at the same time. That's the trick. Almost everything does one or the other. This one does both.
  • In studies, salidroside is associated with BDNF and NGF, the proteins your brain uses to lay down new wiring. It's not just today. It's tomorrow's brain too.
  • Arctic explorers took it. Submarine crews took it. Fighter pilots took it. Nobody was chasing a vibe. It worked, so it stayed.
  • Still can't be farmed at scale. Every dose you take grew wild on a mountain that never asked permission.
  • It was part of Lazarev and Brekhman's original classified files. This root basically has top-secret clearance. lol.

Qi (Energy) · Jing (Essence)

Cordyceps

Cordyceps militaris

The Performance Fungus

  • Two compounds, adenosine and cordycepin, crank up ATP and oxygen uptake right at the cellular level. ATP is the fuel your cells actually spend. More fuel, more you.
  • 1993, Chinese national team, three world records fall in women's distance running in one meet. Everyone screamed doping. The coach said no, it's Cordyceps. The IOC tested them. Clean. Read that twice.
  • We use Cordyceps militaris. Cultivated, ethically grown, same active compounds as the wild stuff. No caterpillars were harmed in the making of this blend. lol.
  • Ancient cultures used it for libido and vigor long before anyone could spell mitochondria. Modern research keeps nodding along.
  • It's as good for the recovery as it is for the effort. You rebuild faster between one battle and the next.
  • The name in the wild is Winter Worm, Summer Grass. A fungus that grows out of an insect on a mountainside. Nature is not always polite. But it's always brilliant.

Jing (Essence) · Qi (Energy)

Shilajit

Himalayan mineral exudate

The Mountain Conqueror

  • Not a plant. Not a mushroom. It's a black resin that oozes out of Himalayan rock, made of plant matter that's been pressed under mountains for fifty million years. Deep time in your cup.
  • More than 84 essential minerals in a form your body can actually use, carried by fulvic acid, the compound that escorts nutrients right to the cell's door.
  • The Ayurvedic name means conqueror of mountains, destroyer of weakness. The marketing team back then was not messing around.
  • Shilajit is a synergist. It makes every ingredient work better. It's the one that lifts the whole team.
  • Wakes up your mitochondria. Same food going in, more energy coming out.
  • Ayurveda used it for stamina and a clear head thousands of years ago. Modern research checked both boxes. Nice work, ancient India.

Jing (Essence)

Lion's Mane

Hericium erinaceus

The Brain Mushroom

  • In studies, it stimulates NGF and BDNF, the two proteins your brain leans on to lay down new connections. Yes, your brain can still do that. At any age. This is the mushroom that keeps the lights on for it.
  • Japanese monks ate it before long meditation because they wanted a sharper mind. It delivered. Monks don't leave reviews, but they kept eating it, which is the review.
  • The gut-brain axis is not a slogan. Lion's Mane cares for the gut lining, and your gut talks straight to your brain through the vagus nerve. Fix the kitchen and the whole house runs better.
  • Memory, focus, clarity. The research keeps stacking in the same direction, which is the direction you want.
  • It looks like a little white waterfall growing on a log and it's quietly rewiring your head. Sacred and ridiculous at the same time.
  • The 2025 systems-biology work flags it specifically for mental fatigue and cognitive stamina. Right on time, because everybody's fried.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are adaptogens?

A class of plants, roots and mushrooms that help your body handle stress instead of buckling under it. A Soviet scientist named Lazarev coined the word in the 1940s during state-funded research, and his student Brekhman built the framework we still use. They're not single-target pills. They work across your whole stress-and-hormone network, which is why one plant seems to help so many things at once. That used to sound like a red flag. Turns out it's the whole point.

How do I take Excalibur?

Mix 2.5 grams (roughly half a teaspoon) of Excalibur powder into your morning coffee, hot chocolate, or any warm drink. One dose per day is enough. Do not exceed 2 servings in 24 hours.

Are adaptogens safe?

People have used them for thousands of years across Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, and the modern research on Ashwagandha, Rhodiola and Ginseng is deep. Our formulas are organic, freeze-dried extracts. Pure plant, nothing else. Like anything, if you're pregnant, nursing, or on prescription meds, check with your doctor first. Smart, not scared.

What does Lion's Mane do for the brain?

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) stimulates the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). These are the two proteins your brain uses to grow and maintain neural connections. Clinical studies suggest improvements in memory, focus, and cognitive function. It also supports gut health by regenerating the digestive lining, and that gut-brain connection is more powerful than most people realize.

What makes Excalibur different from other adaptogen supplements?

Two things. First, the freeze-drying keeps both the water-loving and fat-loving compounds in one powder. Most products only capture one. Second, the combination. The research on adaptogen blends shows a mix does things no single ingredient can, seven plants moving as one network, with Shilajit making all of it work harder. That's by design, not by accident.

Can I take adaptogens every day?

Yes, and daily is actually the way. Here's a beautiful detail from the research. Adaptogens work on a biphasic curve. A small steady dose acts like a light stress rehearsal that trains your resilience, the same way a little exercise makes a muscle stronger. More is not better. A modest daily amount, over time, is what builds the thing. I take Excalibur six days out of seven and it keeps me sharp.

Where does the science on adaptogens actually come from?

Way further back than most people think. Chinese medicine has been using these plants for around three thousand years. Ayurveda for about as long. The Siberians too. These traditions tested what the plants did on millions of humans across dozens of centuries, which is a bigger study than any lab will ever run. Then in the 1940s the Soviets put it all under a microscope, coined the word adaptogen, and spent decades proving on athletes and cosmonauts what the old masters already knew. And today it lands in the work of Alexander Panossian, who moved the whole thing into modern systems biology. His papers map how these plants nudge entire networks in the body at once, the stress hormones, the molecular repair crews, the brain's growth proteins. So the real answer is three thousand years of tradition and seventy years of hard science pointing at the exact same thing. Peer-reviewed, open-access, published. You can go read it. I did.
